Merlyn G. Matz

MERLYN G. MATZ, age 89 of Waterville, died on Saturday, December 26, 2015 at Mayo Clinic Health System in New Prague.

Born in Le Sueur County on June 20, 1926, Merlyn was the son of George and Nellie (Poehler) Matz.  He attended Cannonville school and later graduated from Waterville High School before enlisting in the United States Navy in 1944.  During his service, Merlyn served on the USS Broadwater.  On June 22, 1950 he married Margaret Faltersack at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Waterville.  Throughout the years he worked various jobs before taking on his role as a high line inspector with NSP/Xcel Energy for 35 years before retiring in 1980.  He enjoyed automotive work, working on small engines and restoring garden tractors, fishing, traveling, time with his family, and caring for his dog, Lulu.  He was a member of the Le Center VFW, the Morristown American Legion, and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Waterville where he served as Senior Warden for many years.

Merlyn is survived by his wife, Margaret of Waterville; his son, David Matz and his special friend Tammy Martz of Waterville; and two granddaughters, Jenni and Jessica Matz; three great-grandchildren, Layne, Lennon, and Tesla; one nephew, Ryan Matz; and one niece, Sharon Brown.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother, Marlyn (Vera) Matz; and one sister, Marcella (Ralph) Smith.

A private family service will be held with interment at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
