Brian M. Ziemer

Brian Michael Ziemer passed away peacefully December 9, 2015 in his home at the age of 70.

Brian, the son of Melvin and Celia (Moran) Ziemer was born June 7, 1945 in Hutchinson, Minnesota.  He attended school at Slayton and Hutchinson.  He graduated from Mankato State University.   Brian had a passion for sports.  He was co-captain of football, basketball and baseball his senior year at Hutchinson, lettering in baseball as a freshman at Slayton and Mankato State.  He married his wife, Sonia Ann Schilling, on August 30, 1965.  Brian was drafted into the United States Army in 1965 and served in Germany during the Vietnam Era.  He worked for the United States Postal Service until 2000, retiring as Postmaster of the Owatonna Post Office.

Brian enjoyed family activities, travel, sports, fitness, golfing, playing cards and indoor/outdoor home improvement projects throughout his life.  He served four years on the Elysian City Council and was a member and held offices with the American Legion (38 years), Historical Society-Chapter 1 Elysian, Rotary, Kiwanis and United Way.  He was a head elder and Sunday school teacher for his church.  He was also a host father for five foreign exchange students.

Brian is survived by his wife, Sonia of Elysian; two children, Lisa (Jim) Roberge of Waterloo, NE and Jason (Tina) Ziemer of North St. Paul, MN; and four grandchildren, Cole (Sara) Roberge, Colin Roberge, Annika and Kyle Ziemer; and one great granddaughter, Collins Roberge.  He is also survived by two brothers, Douglas (Sandy) Ziemer of Boca Raton, FL; Mark (Maureen) Ziemer of Hutchinson, MN; one sister, Patty (Randy) Luthens of Hutchinson, MN; and sisters-in-law,  Beverly Ziemer of Cedar, MN and Lily (Ian Jenike) Iten of Warren, VT; and brother-in-law Chuck (Phyllis) Schilling of New Ulm, MN.

Brian is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Celia Ziemer; and one brother, Roger Ziemer.

Visitation will be held at Dennis Funeral & Cremation Services in Waterville on Monday, December 28, 2015 from 4-7 PM and continue on Tuesday, one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waterville with Rev. David Mumme officiating.  Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
